Azep general information
What is Azep used for?
Azep nasal spray is used to treat seasonal allergic rhinitis caused by allergy to pollen, also known as hay fever, to relieve nasal symptoms including nasal congestion, runny itchy nose and sneezing. Azep nasal spray is also used to treat vasomotor rhinitis, which is an intermittent dripping nose usually caused by an irritant in the air or as a reaction to a medication; and postnasal drip, mucus from the nose dripping into the back of the throat.
How does Azep work?
Azep nasal spray contains azelastine, which is an antihistamine that blocks the action of histamine, a chemical released from mast cells (cells involved in allergies), in response to allergens like pollen during an allergic reaction. Histamine binds to the H1 receptor in small blood vessels in the nasal passages causing them to leak, allowing white blood cells and blood proteins into the tissues to respond to allergens like pollen, causing inflammation, tissue swelling, over production of mucus and irritation. Azelastine in Azep nasal spray binds to H1 receptors and blocks histamine-mediated actions, as well as acting directly on the mast cells to reduce the amount of histamine released. This dual action of Azep nasal spray reduces nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis like nasal congestion, runny itchy nose and sneezing. Azep nasal spray begins to take effect rapidly within 15 minutes and lasts for up to 12 hours.
What does Azep contain?
Azep Nasal Spray contains the active ingredient azelastine hydrochloride 0.1%, an antihistamine used to treat nasal symptoms of allergic and non-allergic rhinitis. It also contains methyl hydroxypropyl cellulose, sodium edetate, citric acid, sodium chloride, sodium phosphate and water. Azep nasal spray is supplied as a metered dose spray pump and each actuation (metered spray) delivers 140mcg azelastine hydrochloride into the nasal passages; each bottle of Azep nasal spray contains 70 doses.
