What is Staphban used for?

Staphban ointment 2% is a topical treatment for bacterial skin infections in dogs, known as pyoderma.  These include superficial pyoderma caused by a cut or superficial wound, an insect bite that causes irritation, or infestation with fleas or mites.  Scratching or chewing causes the skin lesion to worsen and it can then become infected.  Staphban ointment helps prevent the spread of infection and relieves symptoms of infected skin lesions, which include itching, scratching, redness and hair loss. 

How does Staphban work?

Staphban ointment contains mupirocin, an antibiotic that has very potent bactericidal activity, and is used as a topical treatment for skin infections in dogs.  Mupirocin in Staphban ointment inhibits protein and RNA synthesis in susceptible bacteria, which include Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species, and Haemophilus influenza.  Mupirocin in Staphban ointment is also effective against methicillin resistant staphylococcus.  Staphban ointment blocks growth and replication of the susceptible bacteria and prevents the spread of the infection.

When should Staphban not be used?

You should not give Staphban ointment 2% to your dog if your dog:

  • is allergic to mupirocin or any ingredients in Staphban
  • is pregnant or lactating

How should Staphban be used?

You should clean the skin lesion and trim surrounding hair before applying Staphban ointment 2% to your dog’s skin.  Squeeze a small amount of onto your finger tip and rub in gently; always wash your hands before and after applying the ointment.  Apply to the affected area twice daily.  You should continue to apply Staphban ointment to your dog’s skin until the infection has cleared or as long as recommended by your veterinarian, but for no longer than 30 days.

Missed dose of Staphban

If you miss a dose of Staphban ointment 2% apply it as soon as you remember, unless it is time to apply the next dose, then skip the missed dose.  Do not apply a double dose.

How should Staphban be stored?

You should store your Staphban ointment 2% below 25°C in a cool dry place.
