Lafaxid general information

What is Lafaxid used for?

Lafaxid tablets 10mg are used to treat several conditions that are caused by excess gastric (stomach) acid production.  These include treatment and prevention of peptic ulcers in the stomach (gastric ulcers or damage to the stomach lining) and duodenum (duodenal ulcers or damage to the lining of the upper intestine); and gastric ulcers caused by use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID); also stomal ulcers, which is an ulcer in the intestinal mucosa near the opening between the stomach and the jejunum (part of the small intestine between the duodenum and ileum) that occurs following surgery to join the stomach and the jejunum.  Lafaxid tablets 10mg can also be used as combination therapy to treat gastric ulcers that are caused by infection of the stomach with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, in conjunction with using antibiotics.  Lafaxid tablets 10mg are also used to treat lesions in the gastric mucosa (stomach liming) caused by acute gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining), and acute exacerbation of chronic gastritis, which can cause erosion, haemorrhage, redness and edema (swelling).

How does Lafaxid work?

Lafaxid tablets 10mg contain lafutidine, a specific histamine H2-receptor antagonist that is used to treat conditions caused by excess gastric acid, by reducing the amount of gastric acid produced into the stomach.  Stomach acid is needed for digestion of proteins in the diet and is made by the parietal cells of the stomach wall.  Stimulation of the gastric H2-receptor, by histamine produced by specific cells in the stomach wall, stimulates acid production by the parietal cells.  Lafutidine in Lafaxid tablets 10mg blocks the production of gastric acid by several distinct mechanisms.  It binds to the H2-receptor on the acid producing cells of the stomach and inhibits basal (unstimulated) amounts such as at night or in between meals and secretion of gastric acid stimulated by food; it also reduces the volume and the acidity of the secretion.  Lafutidine in Lafaxid tablets 10mg also has a direct protective effect of the cells of the gastric mucosa, the stomach lining that comprises several cell types and a layer of mucus, by stimulating the release of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), a small protein with several important properties, from specific nerves in the gastric mucosa.  Stimulation of CGRP blocks gastric acid secretion by inactivation of the vagal nerve and stimulating release of another protein, somatostatin.  Lafutidine in Lafaxid tablets 10mg also promotes healing of the gastric mucosa by stimulating blood flow, mucin production and growth of the epithelial lining cells.  The bacterium Helicobacter pylori binds to the gastric mucosa and causes chronic inflammation, which is associated with the development of duodenal and gastric ulcers.  Lafutidine in Lafaxid tablets 10mg blocks the binding of Helicobacter pylori, which helps reduce the risk of bacteria induced ulcers.  These actions of lafutidine in Lafaxid tablets 10mg reduces the acidity of the stomach contents, which helps prevent the formation of peptic ulcers and gastritis and helps restore the gastric mucosa, which helps damage caused to the gastric lining to heal.

Treating peptic ulcers with Lafaxid

Lafaxid tablets 10mg contains lafutidine, a histamine H2-receptor antagonist that is used to treat various conditions caused by excess gastric acid.  These include peptic ulcers in the stomach and duodenum that cause damage to the lining of the stomach and upper intestine.  Gastric ulcers can be caused by several factors including eating high fat or acidic foods, stress, use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) or by infection of the stomach with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori.  Lafutidine in Lafaxid tablets 10mg blocks the production of gastric acid by binding to the H2-receptor on the acid producing cells of the stomach, which inhibits secretion of gastric acid basal; also by stimulating the release of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) from specific nerves in the gastric mucosa.  Lafutidine in Lafaxid tablets 10mg blocks the binding of Helicobacter pylori, which helps reduce the risk of bacteria induced ulcers.  Lafutidine in Lafaxid tablets 10mg also promotes healing of the gastric mucosa by stimulating blood flow, mucin production and growth of the epithelial lining cells.  Lafaxid tablets 10mg reduce the acidity of the stomach contents, which helps prevent the formation of peptic ulcers and helps damage caused to the gastric lining to heal.  Lafaxid tablets 10mg can also be used as combination therapy to treat gastric ulcers that are caused by infection of the stomach with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, in conjunction with using antibiotics.
