Soltop-N Cream general information

What is Soltop-N Cream used for?

Soltop-N Cream 0.05% is a topical skin cream used to treat several moderate to severe inflammatory resistant dermatoses, of the skin and scalp, where there is also a bacterial infection or where a bacterial infection is likely to occur.  These conditions include including eczema, dermatitis, intertrigo (a rash in the folds of the skin), prurigo (itchy lumps on the skin), lichen planus (itchy swollen rash on the skin), moderate to severe psoriasis (a chronic autoimmune skin condition causing red, itchy, scaly patches of skin on the body) and discoid lupus erythematosus (a chronic skin condition causing sores and scarring usually on the face, ears and scalp). Soltop-N Cream 0.05% helps relieve symptoms such as itching, redness, dryness, crusting, scaling and discomfort and also prevents the spread of susceptible bacteria, relieving symptoms of the infection.

How does Soltop-N Cream work?

Soltop-N Cream 0.05% contains the synthetic corticosteroid clobetasol, which is a high potency anti-inflammatory that is more potent than hydrocortisone.  Clobetasol in Soltop-N Cream 0.05% works by blocking the production of inflammatory chemicals, like prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which are hormone-like substances involved in the inflammatory process.  Clobetasol in Soltop-N Cream 0.05% also narrows and constricts causes blood vessels that have become dilated (widened) and leaky allowing other inflammatory cells into the skin to escalate the inflammatory response.  This reduces symptoms of inflammatory skin conditions particularly those that do not respond satisfactorily to less active steroids.  Soltop-N Cream 0.05% also contains neomycin, a topical antibiotic that is often used to treat or prevent infections of the skin.  Neomycin in Soltop-N Cream is a broad spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic that is effective against most bacteria found in infected skin.  It does not absorb into the skin but inhibits the spread of bacteria that cause infection of inflammatory skin disorders.  It works by blocking the synthesis of essential proteins needed for the bacteria to survive and replicate.  The combination of an anti-inflammatory and an antibiotic in Soltop-N Cream helps relieve symptoms of inflammatory skin disorders like itching, redness, swelling and discomfort and also reduces the risk of infection.

What does Soltop-N Cream contain?

Soltop-N Cream contains the active ingredients clobetasol propionate 0.05%, a corticosteroid anti-inflammatory and neomycin 0.5%, a topical antibiotic, used in combination to treat inflammatory skin conditions that become infected.  It also contains benzyl alcohol 1% in a cream base.

Treating infected dermatitis with Soltop-N Cream

Soltop-N Cream contains clobetasol, a high potency anti-inflammatory corticosteroid, combined with neomycin, a topical antibiotic.  Clobetasol in Soltop-N Cream works by blocking the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which are hormone-like substances involved in the inflammatory process.  Inflammation occurs in several skin conditions including dermatitis and clobetasol in Soltop-N Cream helps relieve symptoms of dermatitis, reducing itching, redness, dryness and soreness, which can become severe if untreated.  Neomycin in Soltop-N Cream is a topical antibiotic that is used to treat secondary skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria in skin damaged by inflammatory dermatoses.  It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, which inhibits bacterial replication, but does not kill the bacteria.  The combination of an anti-inflammatory and an antibiotic in Soltop-N cream helps relieve symptoms of inflammatory skin disorders like itching, redness, swelling and discomfort and also reduces the risk of infection.

What are the side effects of Soltop-N Cream?

The most commonly reported side effects when taking Soltop-N Cream include itching, irritation, acne, cracking, fissuring and dryness at the site of application, also hypopigmentation (loss of skin pigment) and skin atrophy.  Long-term use of Soltop-N Cream may cause the adrenal glands, which produce endogenous (naturally occurring) corticosteroids, to stop working efficiently and this may slow down the growth rate in children.

When should Soltop-N Cream not be used?

You should not use Soltop-N Cream if you:

  • are allergic to clobetasol or neomycin or any ingredients in Soltop-N Cream
  • are pregnant or are breastfeeding
  • have a viral infection of the skin, tuberculosis, acne rosacea (a chronic skin condition), perioral dermatitis (facial rash around the mouth), fungal skin infections and ulcerative conditions
  • have damaged skin

How should Soltop-N Cream be used?

You should apply a thin film of Soltop-N Cream 0.05% to the affected area of skin twice daily, morning and evening, gently rubbing into the skin.  You should always wash your hands after applying the medication and make sure you don’t get any in your eyes, nose or mouth.  Soltop-N Cream is intended for short term use and should not be used for more than 2 weeks.  If there is no improvement in symptoms within 2 weeks, you should follow you doctors recommendations.

How long should you take Soltop-N Cream?

Soltop-N Cream is intended for short term use and should not be used for more than 2 weeks.  If there is no improvement in symptoms within 2 weeks, you should follow you doctors recommendations.

Missed dose of Soltop-N Cream
