Dymista general information

What is Dymista used for?

Dymista Nasal Spray is combination medication used for symptomatic treatment and prevention of moderate to severe allergic rhinitis, which is an allergic reaction causing irritation and inflammation of the nasal passages.  Allergic rhinitis can be seasonal caused by pollen (hay fever) or perennial caused by allergens such a house dust mites, mould or animal fur.  Dymista Nasal Spray acts locally on the nasopharyngeal passages to relieve symptoms including increased mucous production, nasal swelling and congestion, runny itchy nose, sneezing and problems sleeping.  Dymista Nasal Spray is also used to treat rhino-conjunctivitis, which is inflammation of the conjunctiva (the membrane covering the white of the eye), due to allergy like hay fever, with symptoms including tearing, itchy, red, and puffy eyes.  Dymista Nasal Spray treats and prevents development of severe symptoms due to allergy and inflammation, when a combination of a corticosteroid and antihistamine is appropriate.

How does Dymista work?

Dymista Nasal Spray contains fluticasone dipropionate, a potent corticosteroid and anti-inflammatory and azelastine, a potent, fast and long-acting antihistamine that work together to treat and prevent allergic rhinitis and rhino-conjunctivitis due to allergic reaction and inflammation in the nasal passages. Fluticasone in Dymista Nasal Spray blocks the production of inflammatory chemicals, like prostaglandins, and reduces signs of inflammation, including mucus production, swelling and irritation, which helps relieve symptoms like runny itchy nose, nasal congestion and sneezing for up to 24 hours.  Azelastine in Dymista Nasal Spray is an antihistamine that blocks the action of histamine, a chemical released from mast cells, in response to allergens like pollen during an allergic reaction.  Histamine binds to the H1 receptor in small blood vessels in the nasal passages causing them to leak, allowing white blood cells and blood proteins into the tissues, causing inflammation, tissue swelling, over production of mucus and irritation.  Azelastine in Dymista Nasal Spray binds to H1 receptors and blocks histamine-mediated actions, as well as acting directly on the mast cells to reduce the amount of histamine released.  This dual action of Dymista Nasal Spray reduces nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis like nasal congestion, runny itchy nose and sneezing, as well as symptoms of inflammation like rhino-conjunctivitis.

What does Dymista contain?

Dymista Nasal Spray contains the active ingredients (per spray) azelastine hydrochloride (125mcg) a potent, fast-acting, long-acting antihistamine, and fluticasone dipropionate (50mcg), a potent corticosteroid and anti-inflammatory that work together to treat and prevent allergic rhinitis and rhino-conjunctivitis due to allergic reaction and inflammation in the nasal passages.  It also contains disodium edetate, glycerol, microcrystalline cellulose, carmellose sodium, polysorbate 80, benzalkonium chloride (14mcg), phenethyl alcohol, purified water.  Each gram of suspension contains 1 mg azelastine and 0.365 mg fluticasone. Each metered spray of 137mg delivers 125mcg azelastine and 50mcg fluticasone into the nasal passages, and each bottle of Dymista nasal spray contains 120 doses.
