Univent nebules 500mcg contain the bronchodilator ipratropium, which is used for the short term acute inhalation treatment of the reversible component in chronic obstructive airways disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and bronchial asthma, to relieve symptoms of bronchospasm.

Univent general information

What is Univent used for?

Univent nebules 500mcg are used for the short term acute treatment of the reversible component in chronic obstructive airways disease (COPD), a progressive obstructive airways disease that gets worse with time, such as chronic bronchitis and bronchial asthma.  Univent nebules 500mcg are also used to treat reversible airways obstruction in acute and chronic asthma, in combination with other inhaled asthma medications like a beta2-agonist.  Univent nebules 500mcg contain a nebuliser solution that is used with a nebuliser to improve air flow to the lungs by relieving symptoms caused by reversible bronchospasm (narrowing of the airways), such as shortness of breath, chronic cough with sputum production, tightness of the chest and wheezing.

How does Univent work?

Univent nebules 500mcg contain ipratropium, a rapid and long-acting anticholinergic bronchodilator that acts on specific muscarinic receptors in the bronchioles (small airways) of the lung.  Acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter or chemical messenger of the nervous system) interacts with muscarinic receptors, causing bronchospasm (constriction) of the airway wall.  Ipratropium in Univent nebules 500mcg blocks the action of acetylcholine in the airways, causing the smooth muscle in the airway walls to relax and the airways to dilate (widen), which increases air flow into the lungs and relieves bronchospasm (narrowing of the airways).  When inhaled ipratropium in Univent nebules 500mcg goes directly into the lungs and very little is absorbed into the blood circulation.  Regular long-term use of Univent nebules 500mcg helps relieve reversible bronchospasm and symptoms of obstructive airways diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis and chronic asthma reducing shortness of breath, chronic cough with sputum production, tightness of the chest and wheezing.  Univent nebules 500mcg are effective within 3-5 minutes of inhalation and the effect on the airways lasts for 5-6 hours.

What does Univent contain?

Univent nebules 500mcg contain the active ingredient ipratropium bromide (500mcg/2ml), a bronchodilator used to treat reversible bronchospasm associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis and chronic asthma.  They also contain sodium chloride, hydrochloric acid and purified water.  Each nebule provides one nebulised inhalation dose.

Treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with Univent

Univent nebules 500mcg contain the bronchodilator ipratropium that is used for the short term acute treatment of the reversible component in chronic obstructive airways disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and bronchial asthma.  Ipratropium in Univent nebules 500mcg acts directly on the bronchioles (small airways) of the lung blocking the action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which relaxes the muscles of the airways, reducing bronchospasm (narrowing of the airways) and increasing air flow into the lungs.  Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive obstructive airways disease that usually gets worse with time, with symptoms similar to asthma, including tightness of the chest, wheezing and shortness of breath, as well as chronic cough with sputum production, because the lung tissues have become damaged.  Regular use of Univent nebules 500mcg relieves symptoms of reversible bronchospasm.

What are the side effects of Univent?

The most commonly reported side effects when taking Univent nebules 500mcg include headache, cough, dry mouth and throat, nausea, constipation, upset stomach.

When should Univent not be used?

You should not use Univent nebules 500mcg if you:

  • are allergic to ipratropium or any ingredients in Univent

  • have glaucoma, prostatic hyperplasia or urinary problems
  • are having an acute episode of bronchospasm; Univent is not intended for rescue therapy
  • are taking medicines that interact with Univent including beta-adrenergic drugs and xanthine that enhance the bronchodilatory effect

How should Univent be taken?

You should take your Univent nebules 500mcg by inhalation only 3-4 times daily using a nebuliser.  This produces a fine mist which can then be inhaled using a face mask or mouthpiece.  Each nebulisation treatment should take 10-15 minutes and should be as recommended by your doctor.  Dilution of the nebules should be under supervision or as recommended by your doctor. You should continue to take your Univent nebules 500mcg until your breathing is stabilised or for as long as recommended by your doctor.
